    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining 14 дней назад

      Check your External folder (Files/Externals) if the missing documents are in there, it means they are not properly linked in Mendeley or you are using the online version of Mendeley. You can't import PDFs from the online version because they are behind a firewall and so inaccessible to NVivo. The desktop version is free and syncs the files to your local device, so the import will work perfectly. I hope this response is helpful.

    Thank you very much for this wonderful resource Ben. I am using IPA for the first time and also, I am slightly new to NVIVO. I was able to follow how the codes keep getting refined as you move from Phase 2 to Phase 3 to Phase 4. How can those codes be moved from the Phase 2 file into the Phase 3 file and then phase 3 to Phase 4? I'm assuming you had to copy them into the next folder and then use strategies to categorise them, if you don't mind.

      @@qdatraining Thank you very much for your response Ben It was really helpful. I have another question. I am currently working on a long transcript and everytime I progress in the stages of coding, NVIVO becomes extremely slow to the point where the screen goes blank for a minute until it can process the code and then comes back. Is it because the transcript file is large? or is there any other work around? I got a complete IT check done with the device I am using and it has no storage issue. Your advice would be very helpful.

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining Месяц назад

      @@apoorvasriram6123 It depends on what you mean by the file being large. If it is very large, (hundreds of pages) it would make less demands on your processor if you broke the document into a few documents. You can make a new document in NVivo and edit the existing one and cut and paste some sections from the very large file to smaller ones. Any coding you have done on those segments will copy over as well. A more likely cause is that your NVivo project file is in a syncing folder such as OneDrive etc. If it is, create a folder in your C:\ Drive and put your NVivo project file in that folder instead. Then, back up to the cloud. Opening a project in syncing folders should be avoided for several reasons. I hope this response is helpful,

      @@qdatraining Thank you again for your help Ben. I did the exact thing you suggested. It was a 48 page long transcript and I broke it into three documents. I just had too many initial exploratory notes as annotations as the data is extremely rich. Now that I have been able to break the document into three files inside NVIVO, do I retain the original document or can I delete it? Will I loose the annotations and codes copied to the short documents if I delete the original document? Also, I will figure this cloud sync issue as well. Thanks so much again Ben.

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining Месяц назад

      @@apoorvasriram6123 When you copied the text over to the new documents, you will notice that the coding done on those segments also copied over; you can therefore delete the original without losing any coding. You do want duplicate files. Also, remove any tables in your document, as these play havoc with memory on your device when coding.

  • @kukud44
    @kukud44 Месяц назад

    Coding in reflexive thematic analysis ought to be organic and open. You DO NOT need a pre-prapared list of codes with which to drag text into. This is a major difference between a reflexive approach to TA and other approaches such as 'Codebook' and 'coding reliability '.

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining Месяц назад

      Thank you for your contribution. However, I don't understand why you would make the assumption that the phase 2 - Systematic Data Codes were pre-prepared? Where in the video is this suggested? This study was a real environmental study conducted by Duke University in the US. The phase 2 codes WERE NOT prepared but developed organically and inductively from the interviews from the bottom up; a process that took several weeks. The entire point of the video was to show researchers how they might apply the 6 stages of IPA in a tool such as NVivo. It does not deviate in any way from the philosophical underpinnings of RTA.

    Thanks Ben for this informative Seminar. Quick question that I need to answer before I can begin coding. My final sample size is 234 records and I'm exporting from ZOTERO. However, 158 of those records do not have a PDF attached. These files *can* get PDFs attached (but not found through the query on Zotero) but it would be a record-by-record strategy of copying the URL and clicking through the webpage to save the article as a PDF (not a view online) and reimporting into Zotero. The problem with this strategy is that it loses the tags** that are automatically assigned through the original platform from which the record was systematically identified (through an advanced search). This means I'd have to copy/paste all those tags over to the new PDF record so as to not lose that data. As a result, these 158 (view online) records are classes as EXTERNAL on NVIVO while the PDF files that transferred successfully during the systematic advanced platform search are classed as FILES. The sample size adds up but I can't actually code EXTERNAL files because I can only see memo data, not the written file itself. This means I'll certainly have to address the PDFs on each of those 158. QUESTION -- do you know how to solve this problem in the quickest, least tedious process possible?

    Hi Ben Thanks for this. I am experimenting with this to see whether to use Nvivo for the lit review. I imported few refs from Zotero. First difficulty was the import RIS file did not go in the created file under Files in spite of me signposting it. But I could move it once downloaded. Created the cases. With Classifications, similar issues with exel not going in the created Lit Metadata, rather creates its on subfolder, in my case called Title. I tried naming the first line of exel as Lit Metadata, but also didn't work. Any suggestions?

      NVivo takes the text in the cell A1 as the name of the classification. You can rename a classification sheet by right-clicking and selecting 'Classification Properties' Once the cases are linked to the classification, it will work regardless of the name. I hope this response is helpful, but do let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

      Create new blank project in NVivo and save it. In the import tab in the ribbon select, import/project; browse to your original project file (not the one that was created when you upgraded your old file which has NVivo 14 in brackets in the file name) and import it. You should be able to see all of your files and codes as normal. I hope this response is helpful,

    This video was extremely helpful. Once the inter-rater reliability is conducted do I save the Master file, make new copies, and send it back to the coders to continue coding? Or do I make a new project?. I am looking for the best way to periodically merge the NVIVO project files with the master file to upload the new transcripts to code AND then send them back to the coders without any file corruptions, thank you!

      You can customise reports to add fields so a standard formatted report. See this video: ruclips.net/video/N7rDsK4Nkvk/видео.htmlsi=T-YpOLKz-2lwV-KI Alternatively, you could turn on your coding stripes for cases and the speaker's name will appear adjacent to each comment. You can print the transcript with coding stripes displayed to Word, PDF or paper. I hope this helps.

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining 6 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately, there is no facility for viewing coding stripes by user in NVivo from Mac as yet. There are several functions in NVivo for Windows that are not consistent with NVivo from Mac. The developers, Lumivero, have committed to bringing some of these missing features more in line with the Windows version, but that is still in development I'm afraid. However, the coding comparison query in NVivo from Mac automatically calculates A weighted average, which the Windows version does not do.

    How do you get the project map to show the direction? It only seems to visualize it as a one way arrow, even when you choose associated (no arrows) or informs (arrows on both ends). Can it only be done in a concept map (i.e. manually as a model)?

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining 8 месяцев назад

      If the second file was taken as a copy of the original one and coded remotely, you can merge project files and run the test. However, if they are two separate NVivo project files, then when you merge NVivo will look at the two transcripts to see if they are the same (created on and modified on dates must be the same) and because they are not, it will not merge but duplicate the second transcript so you cannot run the test because there is no transcript that both coders have coded. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    HI, I wonder how to use Matrix for the literature? I dont know how to built the Author under the Case. Could you help to demonstrate it?

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining 8 месяцев назад

      The author will be an attribute if you imported your literature from any referencing software such as Mendeley or Zotero for example. You could then use the author as either a row or column in your matrix. If you did not import your literature from referencing software, you would have to set up an attribute for 'Author' and either manually enter the authors for each article or import from the likes of Excel. I hope this response is helpful, but do let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

      Dear, many thanks for your help. I used the Mendeley to input the file and code, for instance, the definition of XXX. Then I select all the files and create as cases. Then i copy the Reference under the File Classification and paste into Case Classification. Then I build matrix by selecting colum and row. However, the result is wired. It shows the coding answer but not my coding instead the whole file...Could you tell me which step I did wrong? @@qdatraining

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining 8 месяцев назад

      @@archjun6293 Copy and pasting the file classification won't work. You would need to export your file classification to Excel and import it as a case classification linked to the cases. However, a matrix will work with file classifications in any event. The reason we advise making cases is that certain other queries and visualisations will only work with case classifications, so you should be able to put your 'Author' attribute into the matrix against what ever item you wish to intersect with. So, my next question is what are you putting your 'Author' against in your matrix and for what purpose? Once I know this, I should be able to advise what you may have done incorrectly if you are not getting the desired result.

    • @archjun6293

      Yes, I exported the file classification as excel and imported it into case classification. But the result is not corrent. My intention is to build matrix showing the definition of each item in column and listing each authors in row. @@qdatraining

    So I set up my interviews in files and made cases and classifications...I coded in my file interviews, was I supposed to code in the cases? • @qdatraining

      Hi Alex, yes you can add files to existing cases. It won't affect your existing coding, so you won't have to start again. Just right-click on the file and select 'Code>Code Whole Document', or just 'Code' in older versions and browse to the case you wish to add the file to and select the cases under the cases folder as shown in this screenshot: qdacloud.myqnapcloud.com/share.cgi/Add%20to%20Case%20R1.png?ssid=d3ccace53fe64bb7a3804a4ca38eff57&openfolder=normal&ep=&_dc=1699306326079&fid=d3ccace53fe64bb7a3804a4ca38eff57 Do this for each file and your cases will then work perfectly in terms on matrices, cross tabs and visualisations.

    Dear Ben, I need help with my NVivo, setting up cases for organisation for an embedded case study - data source ranges from interviews and documents like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook post, website etc. My research methodology is multiple case studies (approximately 4-5 cases) and an embedded case study. So, for each organisation, the data set ranges from documents (i.e., undertaking ethnographic content analysis), interviews, observations, and the rest. So, for each organisation, I need to gather separate data for it, presenting each organisation's data separately and later doing a comparative analysis. The need for comparative analysis means I set up cases for each organisation in NVivo, but looking at the colossal nature of my data, I need help linking each organisation's data to its separate cases. My problem at the moment is that I have coded documents (this includes Twitter posts, strategy documents, LinkedIn posts, etc.) for one organisation, and now I want to link to that organisation's cases; this's where I need help on how to do that, all the videos I have watched show how to create cases for interviews, survey or focus groups.

      Thank you for your comment It is worth noting that we are delivering our 2-day NVivo training programme on campus in Sheffield Hallam on the 11th and 12th of December coming. Day 1 - Introduction to NVivo - Setting up your Qualitative Database will help understand the setup issue you are grappling with now and Day 2 - NVivo Underway - analysing your data will help analysis, retrieval and reporting on your codified data. This workshop has been organised by Diane Dawson in the SHU Research Institute. She will register you for the workshop should you wish to attend. To answer your question, you need to make a case from each document and an attribute for the organisational name, plus type of data, positions/role, sector, size of org etc. You can then compare organisational representation in your themes (in-case and cross-case analysis) as well data types etc using a matrix, crosstab, visualisations and reports, against your coded themes. It is of no consequence whether the attribute is 'Gender' or 'Type of Data'. Attributes will work the same way with both examples. I hope this response is helpful, but do let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Perhaps we may get to meet in December.

    Hi, how do I link the pdf to the externals?

    • @qdatraining
      @qdatraining 10 месяцев назад

      You only use Externals for items you can't import such as a reference to a book for example. They are a proxy document linked to the metadata into which you could paste or insert summaries of chapters or the abstract or segments taken from Amazon. To link the PDF, you must import the document as a file. You need to check the documents are already properly linked in your referencing software before importing them into NVivo and you must be using the desktop version of the referencing software because the online versions do not download the linked articles but merely link to them meaning these PDFs are behind a firewall and inaccessible to NVivo for importing. NVivo will treat inaccessible files as 'Externals' You can find more information on 'Externals' and how they work at this link: help-nv.qsrinternational.com/20/mac/Content/files/externals.htm?Highlight=externals I hope this response is helpful,
